Oregon Wineries List: The Complete 2026 Guide

The Willamette Valley is the engine of Oregon wine. The AVA stretches roughly 150 miles north to south from the Columbia River near Portland down to the headwaters near Eugene, hemmed in by the Coast Range to the west and the Cascade foothills to the east. The growing region is famously cool, with maritime air pushing in through the Van Duzer Corridor and long, mild summers that ripen Pinot Noir without the cooked-fruit character that warmer regions struggle to avoid.

Three soil types dominate the premium hillsides. Jory is a deep red volcanic clay weathered from basalt flows, and it produces the dark-fruited, structured Pinot Noir that put Oregon on the map. Willakenzie is marine sedimentary, lifted from an ancient seabed, and tends toward earthier, savorier wines. Loess, also called Laurelwood, is windblown silt deposited over basalt during the Ice Age and creates an elegant, lifted style that’s become its own movement in the past decade.

Pinot Noir accounts for roughly two-thirds of plantings. After that comes Pinot Gris, then Chardonnay, then a long tail that includes Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gamay Noir, sparkling wine made in the traditional method, and small but serious plots of Gewürztraminer, Melon de Bourgogne, and Sauvignon Blanc. The valley has 11 nested sub-AVAs, each with its own elevation, exposure, and soil signature.

Southern Oregon AVA is an umbrella established in 2004 that wraps two distinct historic wine regions together: the Umpqua Valley and the Rogue Valley. The combined region extends roughly 125 miles north to south, climbs from 200 feet to over 2,000 feet in elevation, and produces wines that look almost nothing like Willamette Valley Pinot. Hotter days, cooler nights, and lower rainfall make this Oregon’s home for Mediterranean and Spanish varietals.

The Umpqua Valley AVA, established in 1984, is the older of the two and was the first place Pinot Noir was planted commercially in Oregon (HillCrest Vineyard, 1961). It’s a transitional zone, capable of cool-climate Pinot Noir and Riesling at its higher, wetter northern end and big Tempranillo and Syrah at its warmer southern end. Abacela in Roseburg pioneered serious Tempranillo in North America from this AVA.

The Rogue Valley AVA covers the southernmost growing region in Oregon, including the nested Applegate Valley sub-AVA. It’s the warmest and driest part of the state with three river valleys (Bear Creek, Applegate, Illinois) each producing distinct styles. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, Viognier, and an unusually long tail of experimental varietals (Tannat, Touriga Nacional, Vermentino, Carmenere) all thrive here.

The Columbia Gorge AVA is the most climatically diverse appellation in the country, marketed under the slogan a world of wine in 40 miles. The AVA straddles the Columbia River across both Oregon and Washington, running from Cascade Locks east to The Dalles and reaching from sea level up to about 2,000 feet of elevation. Annual rainfall drops from 60 inches at the western end to under 10 inches at the eastern end. That’s the climate range of much of Europe compressed into a single AVA.

The west side, around Hood River and Mosier, is cool and wet enough for Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, and Chardonnay. As you move east toward The Dalles, vineyards transition through mid-climate Tempranillo, Sangiovese, and Grenache to warm-climate Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel. The soil profile is similarly complex, mixing volcanic basalt with windblown loess and pockets of glacial flood deposits.

The Gorge has a smaller winery count than the Willamette or Southern Oregon AVAs, but its concentration is high enough to support a popular tasting trail. Hood River makes a particularly strong base since most wineries are within a half-hour drive and the city sits at the mouth of the Hood River Valley fruit-growing district.

The Columbia Valley AVA is enormous, covering more than 11 million acres across central and eastern Washington plus a slim corner of northeastern Oregon near Milton-Freewater. The Oregon portion is small in acreage but produces some of the most acclaimed Bordeaux- and Rhône-style wines in the Pacific Northwest, particularly the syrahs that put The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA on the world map.

Two important sub-AVAs reach into Oregon. The Walla Walla Valley AVA, established in 1984, runs across the state line and contains roughly 1,200 planted acres of Oregon ground. Within Walla Walla, the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA, established in 2015, sits entirely on the Oregon side and is famous for its cobblestone-and-gravel soils that produce dark, savory, almost meaty Syrah. A handful of producers in the Rocks have become collector cult names in under a decade.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a growing list of Italian and Spanish varietals dominate the Oregon side. Climate is true continental: hot dry summers, cold winters, and dramatic diurnal temperature swings that hold acidity in the fruit.

The Snake River Valley AVA, established in 2007, is the youngest and most remote of Oregon’s federally recognized wine regions. Most of the AVA sits in southwest Idaho, but the boundary extends west into Malheur and Baker counties on the Oregon side. The growing season here is short and the elevation is high, between 2,000 and 3,000 feet, which means vineyard sites must be carefully chosen for sun exposure and wind protection.

Climate is true high desert. Summer days are hot and bright, nights drop sharply for excellent acid retention, and winters can damage tender vines in exposed sites. The varietal mix favors cool-tolerant aromatic whites (Riesling, Gewürztraminer) alongside warm-season reds that ripen in the long sunny days (Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc, Merlot).

Production is small. Most of the action happens on the Idaho side around Caldwell and Boise, and Oregon-side tasting rooms are rare. Copper Belt in Baker City is the main public-facing pour for visitors traveling the eastern half of the state. Plan to combine a Snake River Valley visit with the Walla Walla side for a full eastern Oregon wine trip.

Several Oregon wineries operate tasting rooms outside the state’s five federally designated AVAs. These include coastal producers in Astoria, Newport, and Otter Rock who source grapes from inland AVAs but pour at the beach, plus Central Oregon wineries near Bend and a handful of producers without a clear regional address in our records.
