Oregon Tails Guides Also worth exploring this summer

The events above are the structured calendar, but there’s a lot more to do in Oregon this summer that doesn’t fit a specific date. Here are a few guides worth reading before you plan your weekends.

Oregon Wildflower Guide, peak season: May–July

Oregon’s wildflower season is one of the best in the West, and the window is short. The single best place to see wildflowers close to Salem is the Rowena Crest & Tom McCall Point Trail in the Columbia River Gorge, balsamroot and lupine turn the hillside gold and purple in late April through May. The full wildflower map covers spots statewide.

Skylight Cave, Oregon: best June & July

Skylight Cave is a lava tube near Sisters in central Oregon with a natural skylight that drops light straight down into the cave floor, it’s one of the more unusual things you can do on a summer day trip from Salem (about 2 hours). June and July are the best months when the sun angle is right. Worth pairing with a stop in Sisters or Smith Rock.

Whale Watching, Oregon Coast

Gray whales are present along the Oregon Coast year-round now, but summer brings additional species and calmer seas. Our full guide covers the best viewing spots from the coast, what to look for, and when to go. The coast is 1.5 hours from Salem, an easy day trip when the Valley gets hot.

Oregon Things To Do Map

If you’re planning a weekend and want to see what’s near a specific area of Oregon, the interactive map is the fastest way to find it. Hikes, waterfalls, swimming holes, scenic viewpoints, and more, all mapped and filterable.

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area: best April–September

The Oregon Dunes are the largest coastal sand dunes in North America, up to 500 feet tall in places, stretching 40 miles along the central Oregon coast. Spring through summer (April to September) is the best time to visit: drier weather, longer days, and ATV season in full swing. It’s about 2.5 hours from Salem and worth pairing with a night in Florence or Coos Bay. Our full guide covers where to access the dunes, what to expect, and whether an ATV rental is worth it.

Day Trips Worth Planning Ahead

Two Oregon destinations that reward a full weekend rather than a rushed day trip: the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor on the southern coast, arguably Oregon’s most spectacular stretch of coastline and one of the most undervisited. And John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in eastern Oregon, three separate units covering painted hills, fossil-rich rock layers, and high desert landscape that looks nothing like western Oregon. Both are 4+ hours from Salem and worth planning properly.
